Gateways & Modems

Gateways and modems are interface components that provide access to field device and network data when direct connectivity is limited or when additional diagnostic visibility is needed. Endress+Hauser distinguishes a modem as a protocol converter (for example HART/USB or FF/Bluetooth) used with a handheld configurator or computer, while a gateway provides a parallel network access point for tools such as FieldCare and can add functions like network and device status monitoring viewable via a standard web browser.

Their operating principle is straightforward but powerful: translate protocols so configuration and diagnostics software can communicate directly with field devices. A modem establishes a point-to-point connection between a device and a USB or Bluetooth interface, while a gateway connects a computer’s Ethernet port into the fieldbus network, enabling controlled access to devices through software or browser-based tools.

Operational value shows up in commissioning speed and diagnostic clarity. Endress+Hauser highlights simple connection to devices in the field, quick commissioning, network/device status monitoring, concise device diagnosis aligned with NAMUR NE 107 (for gateways), and remote monitoring and maintenance via web browser. These capabilities help move diagnostics earlier in the lifecycle, before minor issues become downtime.

Typical applications include enabling access to HART or fieldbus devices from control cabinets, providing remote visibility into instrument health for hard-to-reach assets, supporting troubleshooting without disrupting the control system, and creating a standardized “service port” for skids or packaged equipment. They are also useful where multiple vendor devices coexist and a consistent access method simplifies maintenance.

Selection considerations include protocol fit, environmental and installation constraints (DIN rail vs field), cybersecurity (segmentation, authentication, remote-access policy), and how diagnostic data will be surfaced (browser dashboards vs asset management platforms). Attention to bus loading, addressing, and documentation of access pathways prevents “temporary” connectivity from becoming an unmanaged permanent risk.
