Optical Analysis

Optical analysis encompasses analytical instruments that use light–matter interaction to identify and quantify chemical composition in solids, liquids, slurries, particles, and gases. Endress+Hauser positions its offering as a comprehensive portfolio of atomic and molecular analysis tools supporting laboratory measurement, inline/process analysis, and emissions monitoring, delivering real-time quality and compliance insight.

The portfolio includes both extractive and in-situ technologies such as tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS), quenched fluorescence (QF), Raman spectroscopy, and a range of spectroscopic methods across NIR, IR, UV/Vis, and atomic absorption. These methods are selected based on analyte, matrix effects, installation constraints, response time, and whether the measurement is better performed directly in the process or on a conditioned sample stream.

Key benefits of optical analysis are tied to speed and transparency. Measurements delivered in seconds or minutes improve process transparency and decision-making, help minimize downtime, and support tighter control of operating costs. Inline optical analysis can be non-invasive and non-destructive, reducing sample handling and preparation while improving safety.

Reliability and availability are strengthened through systems designed to be straightforward to operate and maintain, which supports high plant availability. Where emissions must be minimized or documented, reliable gas concentration monitoring provides a pathway to targeted emissions reduction and regulatory compliance. Optical analyzers also contribute to consistent product quality by detecting composition shifts before they translate into off-spec output.

Typical applications include process gas analysis (e.g., moisture and contaminant monitoring), combustion and flue-gas measurement, H2S and other critical component monitoring, particle and dust measurement, ambient/air quality measurement, and continuous emissions monitoring where real-time feedback is needed. Optical techniques are also applied to fast quality checks in chemical and life-sciences production where continuous measurements outperform periodic sampling.
