Cable Probes

Cable probes are flexible temperature sensors built around an RTD or thermocouple element and a connecting cable, intended for direct insertion or contact measurement where compact geometry and routing flexibility are critical. They are commonly selected when a traditional rigid-stem assembly is impractical, or when the measurement point must be reached through tight bends, limited clearance, or complex routing. Typical use cases span general machinery and equipment measurements through more demanding services where robust construction and stable performance are required.

This category includes single or dual RTD/TC configurations, material selections for mineral-insulated (MI) and connection cables, and optional process connections such as compression fittings or threaded connections. Hazardous-area suitability is supported via available Ex approvals, and environmental resilience is addressed through high ingress protection ratings (IP66/67). These design options allow cable probes to be tailored to process media, ambient exposure, and installation constraints without forcing a one-size-fits-all mechanical package.

The primary value of cable probes is mechanical adaptability without sacrificing measurement integrity. Configurable insertion lengths, bendability, and a broad range of connection and sheath materials support reliable readings across common processes while simplifying installation logistics. Cost efficiency and ease of installation are frequent decision drivers, especially when a measurement point needs to be added quickly or standardized across multiple similar assets.

Cable probes are often used for machinery temperature points, HVAC-related sensing, storage temperature monitoring, and laboratory and sterilization equipment. They are also applied in bearings and other confined locations, in high-pressure or cryogenic services, and for reactor surface temperature monitoring where positioning flexibility matters more than a rigid, fully engineered thermowell assembly. This breadth of application is a direct result of their ability to conform to difficult installation conditions while maintaining stable sensing performance.

Integration is typically straightforward: RTD or TC outputs are wired directly to control inputs or paired with a transmitter strategy aligned to the surrounding instrumentation standard. Selection focuses on the sensing element (RTD vs. TC), temperature range, mechanical survivability, and any hazardous-area constraints, followed by confirmation of sheath/cable material compatibility and sealing philosophy at the process interface. Where repeatability and uptime drive value, specifying consistent insertion geometry and connection standards across similar assets simplifies calibration and spares management.
