Extended pH Sensors & Transmitters
pH sensors and transmitters provide continuous measurement of acidity/alkalinity and are among the most widely deployed analytical loops in industrial processes. Endress+Hauser notes that more than 30% of quality-relevant measurements in processes are pH measurements, underscoring the role of pH in product quality, reaction control, and process safety. Reliable pH measurement is therefore a high-leverage signal for optimization and risk reduction.
The portfolio includes multiple sensing technologies - glass electrodes, enamel electrodes, and ISFET sensors - paired with transmitters, assemblies, and calibration solutions. This breadth supports diverse conditions including stable processes, rapidly changing media composition, sticky or heavily polluted media, hygienic applications, and hazardous areas. Sensor choice is typically driven by chemical compatibility, fouling risk, mechanical constraints, and the acceptable maintenance model.
Selection guidance emphasizes matching the reference system and diaphragm design to the application, as these elements strongly influence stability and resistance to poisoning or clogging. ISFET sensors are positioned where glass breakage is intolerable or where media contain high amounts of organic solvents, while enamel sensors are positioned when long-term stability and the lowest maintenance profile are required. These options allow pH measurement to be engineered around process risk rather than forcing the process to accommodate the instrument.
The underlying measurement is potentiometric. For glass and enamel electrodes, the pH-sensitive element develops an electrochemical potential dependent on the hydrogen ion activity in the medium, which is then interpreted by the transmitter to yield pH. Accurate measurement depends on stable reference behavior, appropriate temperature handling, and disciplined calibration practices - especially when pH is used as a control variable rather than a monitoring indicator.
Typical applications span chemical processing, water and wastewater treatment, food & beverage, pharmaceuticals, power generation, and oil & gas contexts. Practical implementation often includes selecting the proper installation assembly (immersion, inline, retractable) to control fouling exposure and ensure service access, while transmitter capabilities support diagnostics, calibration workflow, and integration into broader control and asset-management strategies.
