Flow
Product overview for applications in liquids, gases and steam.
Flow
Flow measurement covers instruments and measurement systems used to quantify the movement of liquids, gases, and steam in process piping. Accurate flow data supports consistent product quality, safe operation, process optimization, and environmental performance. Many media—water, natural gas, steam, mineral oils, and chemicals—must be measured day after day, and the most suitable technology depends on the duty and the process conditions.
Endress+Hauser’s portfolio spans the major flowmeter principles used in process industries. Electromagnetic meters measure volumetric flow of conductive liquids; Coriolis meters provide direct mass flow and can deliver additional variables; ultrasonic meters cover a wide range of liquid services and can be implemented as non-invasive clamp-on devices; vortex meters are widely applied to steam; thermal mass meters target gas mass flow; and differential-pressure flow measurement remains important where primary elements are preferred or where extreme temperatures and pressures apply.
Modern flow measurement is designed for integration, not just indication. Solutions range from communication-capable single measuring points to complete packages that connect to higher-level control and information systems. State-of-the-art communication interfaces and fieldbus options help standardize signals and device information across the measurement layer.
When applied correctly, flow instrumentation improves mass and energy balance closure, reduces product giveaway, and supports tighter control of quality-critical steps. Diagnostics and device information simplify commissioning and maintenance planning, while clamp-on approaches can reduce downtime by enabling measurement without process interruption. Meter selection can also address practical constraints such as limited straight run, allowable pressure drop, corrosion resistance, and hygienic cleanability.
Typical applications include batching and dosing, custody and transfer measurement, steam and condensate monitoring, cooling-water distribution, compressed air and natural gas metering, chemical feed control, and hygienic or single-use process lines where fast changeover and minimized hold-up volume are priorities.
