Nutrient Analyzers & Sensors

Nutrient analyzers and sensors quantify key nitrogen and phosphorus species to control treatment performance, demonstrate regulatory compliance, and reduce discharge-related costs. They are applied at wastewater treatment plant outlets to verify limits and at critical internal process points to optimize biological treatment - supporting aeration control, precipitant dosing, and denitrification monitoring. In water production contexts, nutrient monitoring also supports safe drinking, mineral, and process water objectives.

The portfolio spans multiple measurement principles selected by response-time and accuracy needs. In-situ sensors are positioned for fast trend measurement (notably for nitrate and ammonia) where rapid process feedback is needed. Colorimetric analyzers are positioned for high-precision analysis (for example ammonia, nitrite, phosphate, total phosphorus) when critical control points demand lab-comparable selectivity to meet authority-stipulated limit values.

Colorimetric measurement uses reagents to create a “dyed” reaction product and then photometrically measures color intensity at a relevant wavelength; for certain nutrients, digestion steps at elevated temperature may be required to reach the correct chemical form. Optical nitrate sensors leverage UV absorption characteristics, using a measuring wavelength and a reference wavelength to compute a robust ratio signal. Ion-selective electrodes use selective membranes and measure electrochemical potential versus a reference, enabling measurement that is not influenced by media color and turbidity.

Benefits include coverage from fast inline measurements to regulation-compliant online analysis and the use of standard colorimetric methods aligned with established laboratory approaches. Reagents are supplied ready-to-prepare to support shelf life and are delivered with associated MSDS documentation. Sample conditioning systems support reliable preparation across wastewater stages and may include automatic backflush functions using air, water, or cleaner to maintain measurement integrity.

System integration can extend beyond a single parameter. Liquiline System CA80 analyzers, for example, can be configured to connect additional Memosens sensors to expand process visibility without adding separate measuring devices, supporting a more comprehensive analytical picture at a given control point. Selection typically balances speed, precision, maintenance model, and hydraulic/sample conditioning constraints at the installation.
