Electromagnetic Flowmeters

Electromagnetic (mag) flowmeters measure volumetric flow using Faraday’s law of induction: as a conductive liquid moves through a magnetic field, a voltage is induced and sensed by electrodes; that signal is proportional to flow velocity and therefore volume flow. This principle is applicable to conductive liquids such as water, acids, alkalis, and slurries, and it is inherently non-intrusive to the flow because there are no moving parts in the measuring section.

Operational value comes from high reliability and stable measurement with essentially no mechanical wear. Electromagnetic meters are widely regarded as low-maintenance instruments and are often selected where continuous monitoring, filling, dosing, or custody-transfer measurement must remain dependable over long service intervals. Decades of field use underpin the technology’s maturity, and modern transmitters provide straightforward integration into control and asset-management systems.

Across industry, magmeters are prominent in water and wastewater networks, general process industries, life sciences, and food applications. In tunnel construction and mining, robust electromagnetic meters are frequently chosen for highly abrasive ore slurries with entrained solids, sand-water mixtures, and similar challenging media where accurate measurement must be maintained despite wear mechanisms.

Successful application depends on a few fundamental constraints: the fluid must meet minimum conductivity requirements and the pipe must run full at the measuring point. Selection of liner and electrode materials should align with corrosion, abrasion, and cleaning regimes, while grounding and bonding practices must support a stable reference for the induced signal. Installation should minimize air entrainment and verify that flow profile disturbances and empty-pipe conditions are managed appropriately.

Endress+Hauser’s electromagnetic portfolio is represented by the Proline Promag family, including instruments such as the Promag W 400 for water and wastewater service. Available wetted material combinations (for example, liner and electrode options) enable tailoring to corrosive or abrasive duties while maintaining the core advantages of the electromagnetic measuring principle.
